So apparently there is this worm that everyone predicted would come out days ahead of time and it managed to sneak its way into CNN’s internal network. Now this worm, it doesn’t spread very easily because it needs to connect via a NULL SMB session to port 445 on a Windows computer. Win XP and higher you need to be authenticated to do that so it only affects Windows 2000 and lower. Also, even the lowest competent sysadmins would block Windows file sharing (Port 445) on the border router so it’s very, very hard for this worm to spread from network to network. CNN probably got infected when one of its reporters took his laptop back to HQ after he was out on a far away reporting job in an infected area.
So anyway. CNN has this worm crawling through its internal network now right? So all their computers are rebooting and they cant do anything about it because their sysadmins are incompetent. So this must be news right? Big news! The fastest spreading worm in history! Another Sasser! They proceed to turn on the red flashy graphics, cut into regular reporting and broadcast directly from the “War Room.” “NEWS FLASH! OUR NETWORK IS DOWN! OUR SYSADMINS SUCK!”
They bring this “expert” David Perry on the air and he starts saying that Windows 97, 98, and 99 are affected, they have Wolf Blizter stumbling through a technical explanation of WORM_RBOT.CBJ while in the background you can see random computers crashing and rebooting because of the worm, and while another on-air reporter is standing in front of a giant LCD screen showing a Win2k desktop it comes up with an RPC error and shuts down.
When I find a video of all this my stomach will most likely explode from the laughter. This is all I’ve got so far: http://rapidshare.de/files/4056549/CNN_-_Virus_Hits_CNN__Breaking_News___PiP_.mpg.html

Don’t you love how virus writers are “computer terrorists” now? And how all of a sudden an antivirus researcher is a “counter computer terrorist”?
I LOVE BIG MEDIA!

my cat got hit by a car and died last night.

Our cat was a kitten from one of my neighbors cats litters. They actually gave our cat originally to another one of our neighbors who since moved away. They abandoned it in the house when they moved. I made my mom take it. These neighbors thought we were as neglectful of the cat as the previous owners and kept stealing him for 3 days at a time and feeding him because they thought we didnt.
So it ended up that they found mush, not us, on the street and when they went to tell my mom that mush was dead, the father broke out into cursing at my mom. Then his son came outside and started clapping and yelling followed shortly by the mother. My dad was away on a trip so it was just my mom and my sister. They called the cops to get them to leave and all they got was a warning.
I feel like a public shaming is neccessary, or they should apologize to my mom. She loved that cat more than anything and it was all returned to her. When my parents went on their annual trip to North Carolina, mush sat at the front door all week waiting for her (my sister and I were home with him). There’s absolutely everything wrong with what those neighbors did to her. Death is one of the only sacred things left in our society and they desecrated it.
